I was a chef for a steakhouse restaurant chain. My boss was the Area Director of Operations for a group of locations in the Western United States. She was always on the road and not at any single location more than two days a week. When she was on site, both management and line staff dreaded her and were usually walking on eggshells around her. She had the reputation of being able to completely humiliate employees who were in the weeds.

I had worked the brunch shift at my location two weekends in a row when I was told that I was required to work this weekend as well. I said no, I was on call and the weekend before last was a favor in the first place. I gave a week’s notice.

Her regional manager called me and said they would pay me five hundred for the weekend if I would work it. I said no. She said she would call me back in a few minutes.

About fifteen minutes later she called back and said she would be in my area and wanted to talk to me in person. I balked for a minute and then relented.

She came to my door with a man I had never seen. She was already dressed for work. When she introduced him, the last name was the same as hers. She told me she had a proposal for me. She offered to transfer me to a location near her home. She said she would offer me a ten percent raise and all of my benefits would be completely paid. This was already a good starting offer.

Then she got weird. She said she was willing to put in a good word with her soon to be former in-laws at their headquarters in Texas. She said this would lead to a quick promotion to sous chef and soon after executive chef. I balked and asked what the catch was.

Then it got *really* weird. Her soon to be ex-husband was a higher up in HR. She was in the process of a divorce. This was a revenge divorce. She was going to burn everything he had down and salt the earth. I was to be her revenge affair. I politely declined. She offered me twenty grand. I asked if I could decline rudely. She said yes. I told her that she was too old for me and she should fuck off.

The guy with her grabbed me and searched me. I may have been young and dumb, but I was not stupid. I carry a knife. There is a world of difference between these two things. She told me there was no knife there and smiled. He put my knife to my throat and she told me I was going to do what I was told. I tried to struggle, but he was huge.

Then, out of no where, my do Capitaed neighbor burst through the door. She is older than my mom and gets confused about which door is hers and which is mine. He pulled the knife away from my throat and she smacked him in the nose with her cane. I grabbed the knife and pointed it at him. My neighbor yelled at the top of her lungs and my other neighbors started coming to see what all the yelling was about.

They both ran out the door and down the stairs to her company car. My neighbors and I talked for a few and wrote down as much information as possible to give to the police.

I called my regional manager and told him what happened. The weird part was he seemed to know who it was and what was going on. When he told me both her and her soon to be ex-husband were placed on leave and orders not to contact me, but not fired, I knew she was going to get off Scot free.

I quit and my old manager took over briefly. She was fired a month later. She was not given a reference.

The soon to be ex-husband was fired six months later after he was done with the investigation into the allegations against his then ex-wife.

I think it goes without saying they did not get the divorce she wanted.

Michelle and Steve, let’s not meet again.
