I think it’s time to stop laying off our high school graduates

To give a very quick background, we’ll call me Kevin. I’m 21 years old, and I’m starting to feel like I’m becoming something I don’t want to be. I work at a grocery store, and my manager is not someone I think many people would like. We’ll call her Sarah.

Background on Sarah: Sarah has been with our chain since she was 17 years old, and she’s now in her mid 40’s. She’s done nearly every job, has worked her way up, and she’s seen the company change from your average grocery store into the big box store that many people know and love today. She’s probably one of the best managers our store has, but she’s not the best boss in terms of people. She tends to be very hard on people for no apparent reason other than that she’s just having a bad day. There’s been a few instances of her randomly scolding people on the floor, and she’s pretty rough on new hires.

She’s recently been on a campaign of letting go employees because they are “taking up her time”. This has been the case for one of our employees, which I will call Hannah.

Hannah is a high school graduate, who just started her first job with us. She was a very hard worker, but was one of those employees who needed to be told exactly what to do. Eventually you’d get to a point where you could trust her with her tasks, but she wasn’t the most self-motivated person. That being said, she would always get her tasks done before the day was over.

Recently, Sarah has let three of our employees go for “taking up her time”, and Hannah was the most recent one. I think the straw that broke the camel’s back for me was when Hannah broke down and cried when Sarah laid her off. This was not only the first time I’ve seen Sarah actually lay off an employee in the 8 months I’ve been there (I’ve seen her let two people go because they were moving out of state, and I think one because they got a job at a different store), but it also happened to be less than a month after Hannah started.

My issue with Sarah is that she dispatches on the floor to check her employees, and she is VERY hard on new employees. I don’t think she has a problem with ANY new hires for that matter. I think that what she’s doing is completely disrespectful to young people, and it needs to end. Eventually it is going to start affecting our stores ability to hire new people, because she won’t keep anyone around. Our store is doing okay hiring people, but the lack of people actually wanting to work is becoming a problem, and I think it’s going to be harder for her to get rid of new hires if she can’t hire anybody else.

Has anyone else heard about managers just laying off their employees because they take up their time? This seems a bit extreme to me. I know I’m just a kid, but I don’t think that this is going to last forever, and if she keeps pushing for high standards, I don’t think anyone is going to actually want to take on the job anymore.
