My friend is the asst manager for a major clothing retailer, he also runs their public social media pages. He has been an asst manager for several years and this is his take on this sub as someone who is in charge of preventing shoplifting at his store. He only shared his perspective in the context of this sub, not speaking for the whole company, just as an asst manager at a single location at his company:

The fashion industry is based on fast paced designs, meaning we as a company have new merchandise out every month. It’s in our best interest to sell product over mark down. We as managers want to see that product sell.

When it comes to shoplifting, we would rather not have to deal with you as a customer than try to stop you and risk it turning into a dangerous confrontation.

Theft is terrible in fashion and every place, but it’s also not as big of a deal as some companies make it out to be. We as employees and managers only care about the in-store experience and don’t care if you want to steal as long as you don’t ruin in-store experience for other customers.

If someone is caught shoplifting, it’s our duty as managers to call LP and do in-store ban. We as managers do not call the cops or press charges. We have had instances where we end up getting a call from a LP at a different store saying we had a shoplifter at our store who was also caught at this other store.

Theft is bad don’t get me wrong, but we have a lot bigger priorities as managers than focusing on the 1% of people who steal. We as managers focus on customer and employee satisfaction, employee development, in-store displays and production and in-store direction.

I’m not saying it’s okay to steal. But as a manager for a fashion retailer, I care more about in-store experience and customer satisfaction than focusing on the 1% of people who shoplift.

I don’t think shoplifting sprees are a good thing and I don’t condone it, but I’m just saying as an asst manager, my focus is not on preventing shoplifting but making sure in-store experience runs smoothly.
