I'm a 30 year old man, 2 kids, age 6 & 1. And wife, with a mortgage and changing careers by necessity. I make good money, but would like to make more, and be satisfied with my job, and have a good work-life balance. I'm currently an automotive technician, I'm extremely good at it, but it's extremely hard on the body, and changing economic conditions have made it difficult to find a good job.

I've also done it for a decade, and I'm worried about not being able to do it anymore in my 40s. I'm really interested in changing to tech. I've got no degree, but I have an extremely high aptitude for anything technical, and I've always been that way. I have a solid emergency fund, but I know I'm going to need to take a hit as far as income, for the time being until I get established.

What would be the best career path in tech for someone in my situation, and what would be the best way for me to make it happen? I know it's a bad idea to ask strangers on the internet for career advice, but I'm not sure who else to turn to with it. I know for sure that if I do decide to do it, I'll work my ass off to make it happen.
