The Weakest Link: Clichés

Clichés. We know them. We love them. We hate them.

Most of us learned in high school English class that clichés are bad. The thing is, though, is that clichés are not bad because they are clichés. They are not bad because they are familiar or because they are common. They are bad because they are clichés. They are lazy. They are unoriginal. They are the weakest link in your writing.

I know what you are thinking right now, actually, I know exactly what you are thinking right now, because I know what you are like. You are that wide-eyed little girl who always talks about her vampire boyfriend and how special he is. You are that grizzled detective who is about to retire. You are a chosen one. You are a spy. You are a bad boy. You are an idiot in the friend zone who always seems to be in the most fortunate of positions to rescue your best friend from danger, and then you never capitalize on it. You are a rich kid with daddy issues. You are a poor kid with mommy issues. You are a set of triplets. You are a fairy. You are a wizard. We know you. We know your jokes. We know your conflicts. We already know you, and we don’t like you.

Most of you aren’t even original enough to come up with your own clichés. Instead, you steal them from other people, and then you think you are clever. You are not. You are a hack. You are a plagiarist. You are a thief. When you steal you are at least original enough to try and hide it. When you steal a characters personality, voice, and story, you don’t even have the decency to try and hide it. You don’t even have the decency to give them a different name, or to change their eye color. When you steal you do it shamelessly. You don’t think that you are doing anything wrong. You don’t think that you have done anything wrong. You are proud of your lack of effort. You are proud of your lack of talent. You are so smugly self-assured, and yet you are so spinelessly self-conscious. You lack any kind of merit.

A lot of you are the result of fan-fiction. You know who you are. I hate you. I hate everything about you. You are an abomination. You are a blight. You are the cause of everything that is wrong with this site. I actually hate you. I wish I could burn you at the stake.

Most of you who are not fan-fiction are the result of a wish-fulfillment fantasy. I already told you what you are like. Now imagine that, but you are also an awkward teenager who wears glasses and has a crush on a girl who is completely out of your league. You are that nerdy kid at school who can’t stop talking about video games, and nobody likes you. You are that fat kid who can’t stop talking about video games, and nobody can understand you. You are the captain of the football team, and you are a total asshole. You are the school bully, and you have daddy issues. I know you. We all know you. You are one of us. You lack individuality. You lack any semblance of talent. You lack any semblance of intelligence. You lack any semblance of style. You lack any semblance of taste. We know you. We know your jokes. We know your conflicts. We know your happy ending. We know everything that there is to know about you.

I hate all of you. I wish I could burn all of you at the stake. I know I can’t. So I have to settle for telling you all how much I despise you. I have to settle for telling you all how much you suck. I have to settle for pointing out your massive flaws. I hate every single one of you. I know that you will never change. I know that you will never get better. I know that you will always be exactly as you are now. I know that you will always be pathetic. I know that you will always lack any semblance of intelligence. I know that you will always lack any semblance of individuality. I know that you will always be clichés.

Edit: This post has been locked temporarily pending review from the moderators. If you have any questions, please message the moderators.
