My boyfriend threw out my favorite mug because it was "tarnished" and not "minimal" enough. I'm so upset. What do I do?

So, my boyfriend is a very minimalist person. He's been trying to get me to be one for a while. I've been trying for a few months now, but I'm not like him (he literally only has 100 things). So, we were cleaning our apartment, and he grabbed my favorite mug and put it in the trash pile. I asked what he was doing, and he said it was because it was no longer beautiful, as it was very tarnished. I told him I know it was a little tarnished, but it was my favorite mug because my grandma gave it to me. He said it should have been thrown out a long time ago, and that it wasn't beautiful enough to be displayed. I got very upset, and he told me to stop being upset. He told me that since I was trying to be a minimalist I should be okay with letting go of "ugly" things, even if I have sentimental feelings for them. I told him the only reason I was trying to be a minimalist was for him, and he said I should try harder.
