We both earn good wages and have a little bit to show for it. But now we want to live as frugally as possible, not as a short term test but for a long time. But this seems to be a challenge. Because of course we both know what living frugally feels like, we have already experienced it in the past. For this reason, we want to see to it that we don't always know what to compare ourselves to.

Here's what I mean:

If I'm used to always drinking tap water, I won't know what it's like to have to collect water. If I'm used to always being able to afford food from the supermarket, I won't know what it's like to live off the land. If I'm used to always having cold food, I won't know what it's like to have to fetch ice. If I'm used to always being able to afford public transportation, I won't know what it's like to have to walk several miles to the nearest town every time I need something. If I'm used to always being able to afford new clothes, I won't know what it's like to have to sew my own clothes.

And this is exactly what we want. We want to experience it all for ourselves.

We have been looking for a farm that we can live on for free in exchange for work for months, but unfortunately nothing has become of it yet.

I know that poverty does not have to be like this. Everyone has different experiences with it. But we want to experience it like this.

We know that it will change us in the long run. But we are prepared for that. We know that it will hurt to have to fetch water in the middle of winter in the cold when it freezes. We know that we will not be able to clean ourselves regularly and that our bodies will stink. But we know that it will be worth it for us. We are happy to make this effort.

We want to go from having everything to having nothing. And we want to appreciate the little things more. But this seems to be a challenge. I am always looking for ways to cut back even more. I live in a small apartment with an annual income of 60,000 after taxes, have little to no possessions, collect bottles for the deposit, and always try to find ways to make my life more frugal.

I want to buy cheaper clothes and not always have to pay attention to the quality. I want to fetch my water from a well and not always have access to running water. I want to do physically demanding work to earn my food and not always have the possibility to buy what I want to eat. This seems to be a big challenge.

How do you manage to live frugally?
