The International Olympic Committee (IOC) and most media call us ‘Chinese Taipei’. The International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) call us ‘China Taipei’. The World Trade Organisation (WTO) and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) call us ‘the Separate Customs Territory of Taiwan, Penghu, Kinmen and Matsu (Chinese Taipei)’. The World Health Organisation (WHO) calls us ‘Taiwan, China’. It’s confusing for everyone.<br><br>But it’s also not the Republic of China (ROC) or the People’s Republic of China (PRC). When Taiwanese people hear ‘China’, they think ‘PRC’ or the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). Taiwanese people don’t want to be called ‘Chinese’. Taiwanese people don’t want to be called ‘Chinese Taipei’. We don’t want to be confused with China.<br><br>Taiwan is Taiwan. The name is important. Taiwanese people want to be treated like we’re equal.<br><br>Taiwan is very different from the PRC. Taiwan is a democracy. And Taiwan is pro-Ukraine and anti-Russia in the war in Ukraine. Taiwan is very close to the US. Taiwan wants the world to see Taiwan as a friendly country.<br><br>Taiwan is a member of some international organisations. But our rights are limited, or we have to use a different name. This is like going to school, but your classmates can’t use your real name. And there are some international organisations that Taiwan is not a member of. Taiwan wants to help the world more. But we can’t.<br><br>China is the reason why Taiwan can’t be a full member of international organisations. The CCP does not allow Taiwan to use the name Taiwan. The CCP wants to call us ‘Chinese Taipei’, ‘Taiwan, China’ or something like this. Because the CCP knows that if Taiwanese people hear ‘China’ or ‘Taipei’, they will think of Taiwan. We don’t want to be called Chinese.<br><br>Taiwanese people are proud to be Taiwanese. I am proud to be Taiwanese. And more Taiwanese people are proud to be Taiwanese. Taiwan is Taiwan. Taiwan is not Taiwan, China or Chinese Taipei.<br><br>Over the last five years, ‘Taiwan’ has been used by more media, companies and national leaders. This is good for Taiwanese people like me. But now we need the IOC, the ICAO, the IMF, the WTO, the ITU and WHO to call us ‘Taiwan’. Taiwanese people want to be treated the same as the US and the UK. Taiwanese people want to be treated like we’re equal.<br><br>The CCP does not allow Taiwan to be a full member of international organisations. But now the CCP is not a member of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC). If the UNHRC can kick the CCP out, can the IOC, the ICAO, the IMF, the WTO, the ITU and WHO give Taiwan the name back?<br><br>Taiwan is Taiwan. Taiwan is not China. Taiwan is not ‘Chinese Taipei’. Taiwanese people don’t want to be treated as second-class citizens. Taiwanese people want the world to call our country Taiwan.
