I (30F) just got back from a trip with my parents (70s, Asian immigrants/Mom from Vietnam/Dad from Indonesia). They both grew up in developing countries and didn’t have a lot of opportunities to travel as kids.

Last night, my mom made a list of countries in Asia they want to visit now that their health is pretty good and they have the money. They’re both funny and proud people and the way they were laughing and making plans was adorable.

I wanted to share their list and the story behind why they want to visit these countries. Sorry if it’s not a very typical travel post but I wanted to share this because they’re so excited.

When I asked why they hadn’t traveled before, they said it was hard to get visas, they were busy raising a family, and that the money wasn’t there back then. Now, they’re just grateful that they get to see the world at an older age.

They said they wanted to visit:

* **Japan**: My mom loves Japanese food. I asked her to be more specific and she said, “I love ramen!” They also said they’re curious about the Japanese way of life.

* **Taiwan**: Apparently, we have some distant relatives there, and they’d love to visit them.

* **Cambodia**: My dad used to live there when he was a kid and wants to visit the temples in Angkor Wat.

* **Thailand**: They said someone they know went to Phuket and had a great time. They’d love to try the food and visit the beaches.

* **Korea**: My mom loves the clothes, the music, and the makeup from Korea.

* **Singapore**: My dad said that Singapore wasn’t an independent nation when he was growing up, and he’d love to visit now that it is one.

* **Vietnam**: They said it’s been a while since they visited and would love to go back.

* **China**: They said it’s amazing how much China has grown and would love to visit the bigger cities.

* **Malaysia**: My dad used to live there too. He wants to visit the Batu Caves and try some authentic laksa.

* **Laos**: My mom is curious about the cities and the food.

It’s been a while since I’ve traveled with my parents and I haven’t been to Asia in a while either. It was cute to see them make plans and I’d love to come along if possible. They said they want to visit at least three a year, but I know they’re older, so we’ll see.

This list may not be for everyone, but I wanted to share it because they’re excited and both agreed that traveling is important. They’re already looking forward to our next trip and hopefully, we’ll visit a few of these countries together.

If you have any recommendations for any of these countries, feel free to drop them in the comments below.
