I know the two terms are referring to the same war, but the Great Patriotic War specifically refers to the Soviet resistance of the German invasion of the Soviet Union and World War II refers to all the global events of the war.

But specifically from the Soviet perspective, the Great Patriotic War started in 1941 with Operation Barbarossa and concluded in 1945 with the Soviet capture of Berlin.

From my understanding, the Great Patriotic War was a more propaganda fueled term to emphasize the Soviet war effort. So in the Soviet Union, it seems like the war was about the nation defending itself against Germany and Fascism, hence the Great Patriotic War.

But the Allies on the other hand, called it World War II to emphasize the global scale of the conflict and that it was an international effort to defeat Fascism.

So it seems like the Allies were more focused on the global scale of the war rather than the nation specific war efforts. Does anyone have more information on this?
