Why does the government not write a huge check?

I am not trying to be flippant, but why doesn’t the government just write a massive $1 trillion check to cover shortfalls? I understand that the government must pay for this money, but it seems like money is always cheap for the government. It should be cheap now.<br><br>I know there is a lot of politics behind this, but I am asking from an economic standpoint.
