Does anyone work in a district where parents have absolutely ZERO expectations that teachers get work done outside of school hours? - EDIT: I don't really remember downvoting comments I don't agree with on this post. I'm genuinely confused by them and wanted to have a discussion.

I teach high school English. When I first started mentoring student teachers, I was shocked that they were allowed to leave campus immediately after school and not given any chores/lunch or morning duties. I distinctly remember working 11 hour days as a student teacher my senior year.

I brought it up to my dept head and he was shocked that student teachers had such a different experience. He went on to explain that a few years ago, the district did an audit of teacher and classified staff workload. They found that teachers spend on average 20-30 minutes a day doing classified work (hall monitoring, lunch supervision, chores, running detention, proctoring tests that aren't ours, subbing other classes, etc) and that in many ways student teachers were treated more fairly being excused from all those additional responsibilities.

The district also did a survey of parents from all the local school districts. Parents from our district overwhelmingly said that they believe teachers shouldn't do any work outisde of contract hours. It was the only district in our county where a large majority of parents felt this way. Compared to our neighboring districts, students and parents have MUCH lower expectations of us to do things that are technically outside of our contract deductions like writing college letters of rec, attending sports, and giving extra help outside of school hours.

I bring this up because I've been seeing a lot of posts from teachers going back after summer break and being handed a million tasks to get done in a short period of time. We got all of summer break off plus the first week and a half of inservice was literally devoted to doing anything we needed to get done for the school year. I've also never been asked to do extra help, extracurriculars, or write letters of rec.

I feel like I just hit the jackpot in districts. What are the expectations for teachers in your district?
