When the median worker is making $48,000 a year, why are CEOs making multi-millions of dollars?

Apologies if this has been posted before, but I'm curious as to why CEOs are allowed to be paid so much money when the majority of the workers are barely scraping by. It may be a capitalistic society, but that should not be an excuse for CEO greed.
