As teachers, how do you feel about students asking for extensions on assignments?

When I was in college, due to anxiety, I had a 504 plan that allowed me to request extensions on assignments as needed. My teachers were not happy with that, especially the ones in STEM fields who oftentimes insisted that I just use the mental health center on campus. I am very much a person who asks questions, and I would ask them if they thought I should do my research project, my exams, my quiz, my essays, projects, etc. in the mental health center. They usually answered some form of "yes, you can ask for an extension here too".

I understand where they were coming from, because it did seem like I was asking for a lot of extensions. I'm not sure if this is true, but I think that asking for an extension was like a trigger for me. It felt like I was asking for special treatment at the expense of others. (However, my 504 plan was supposed to make things equal) and it made me very anxious.

I know that the reality is that people will ask for extensions all the time. I have students who are very smart but ask for extensions often, and I give them to them because I genuinely believe that they will produce better work with more time.

I am the complete opposite. I am a very firm believer in not giving extensions, but I understand that sometimes they are necessary as a person who has asked for a lot of them. How do you, teachers, feel about students asking for extensions on assignments?
