I lied about where I lived... to save my life

This happened to me when I was 10 years old. It was 1985, and my parents divorced in 1984. I blocked this out completely until I was in my 30's and it came into my mind one day.

I live in New Jersey, and in 1985 we took a bus to Myrtle Beach, SC to go on vacation. We drove down the strip for a while, and parked the car in a little store parking lot. It was probably around 11am. My mom left me in the car for a few minutes as she went into the store. A man and a woman walked up to the passenger window of the car, and the man tried opening the door. I locked it. The woman was knocking on the glass telling me to open the door. The man was hiding behind her, out of view. At one point he popped up in front of the door and scared the shit out of me. My mom came back to the car, put her key in the drivers door to open it up to get in the car, and then the woman yelled "Oh its her mom, she's okay". Then they both turned around and walked away. I told my mom what happened and she didn't believe me.

Fast forward to the evening. We drove down the street, parked the car, and walked in a restaurant. We walked in the restroom to wash our hands. There was a woman and a man in there. It was the same people who were at our car earlier. They didn't see me when we walked in because we were behind them. I tugged on my mom's shirt, and said "there they are, there they are". The woman turned around and noticed me, while the man was still in front of the sink with his back to us. My mom turned to the woman and said "what the fuck do you want?" The woman got up and walked out of the bathroom without saying anything. The man had no idea we were behind him. He turned around and looked to his right, and saw my mom glare at him and then he looked at me. His eyes widened up, and he started walking out of the bathroom quickly.

We went into the dining area of the restaurant and sat down. I told my mom I had to use the bathroom again. She went in with me this time. The man and woman were gone. But on the floor on the opposite side of where a stall would be was a piece of paper that was rolled up. I picked it up and it was a fast food restaurant napkin. On it was written "I love you" and then some guy's name followed. My mom took it from me, and put it in her pocket.

We left the restaurant, parked the car on the strip, and walked to a small amusement park. There were a few rides. It was dark out by now. My mom won a bunch of stuffed animals from the shooting gallery, and attached them all to her shirt and pants. We started walking to the parking lot. And as we got closer to the car, there they were. The man and woman standing in front of my mom's car. As soon as they noticed us, the man took off in a full sprint across the street. The woman stayed. My mom said "get behind me" and my mom charged at the woman. The woman turned and ran off in the direction of the man.

We drove to a local hotel on the strip. We stayed there for the night. The next day we called the Myrtle Beach police and gave them the napkin. Nothing ever came of it.

I've been thinking over this story, and I have a few theories. One theory is that the woman was trying to get me to open the car door, because my mom was my only guardian with me on the vacation. So to get me and my mom both they would need to get me first. My second theory is that they went into the restaurant bathroom to set up the note in case I ended up in there for any reason. My third theory is that the woman distracted my mom by going into the bathroom. While my mom was distracted, the man could have been outside near the car grabbing me. My last theory is that they followed us into the amusement park ride area. When they saw us walking to the car, the man ran across the street to the parking lot next to ours to cross over and be hiding behind our car. He would then pop out and grab me as I was walking to the car.

As a side note, I used to tell people we lived in a different city than we really did. I didn't tell anyone our real city. I would say we lived in Morristown NJ when we really lived in Parsippany. Even as a kid, my mom told me not to give out too much info about my personal life, and I took that to an extreme.
