It’s time for ASMR 101!

Hello and welcome!

From time-to-time, as a community, we get a lot of questions in regards to what ASMR is. And, given our current growth, we feel now is a good time to remind everyone as to what ASMR is (and what it isn’t).

So, let’s start with what ASMR is.

**What is ASMR?**

Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response (ASMR) is a tingling sensation that some people experience in response to certain auditory, visual, or tactile stimuli, such as whispering or tapping. The sensation is typically felt in the head, neck, or down the spine, and can be described as pleasurable. Common ASMR triggers include whispering, tapping, crinkling sounds, personal attention, and role-playing.

**What triggers ASMR?**

The specific triggers that induce ASMR can vary widely from person to person, but common examples include:

* Whispering
* Tapping
* Crinkling sounds
* Personal attention
* Role-playing
* Nature sounds
* Soft spoken words
* Brushing sounds

**How does ASMR make me feel?**

When someone experiences ASMR, they may feel:

* Relaxed
* Calm
* Sleepy
* Peaceful
* Comforted
* Protected
* Secluded
* Happy

**What does ASMR feel like?**

The sensation that comes with experiencing ASMR is often described as:

* Tingling sensations in the head, neck, or down the spine
* A “warm and fuzzy" feeling
* A “brain orgasm"
* A buzzing or vibrating in the head, neck, or down the spine
* A "cuddle feeling"

**What are ASMR videos?**

ASMR videos are content created to help trigger ASMR in viewers by using specific ASMR triggers. Videos can range widely and include anything from whispered words, tapping sounds, or even more complex scenarios such as role-playing. Content creators use a variety of tools to create these videos, including high-quality microphones, props, and different costumes.

**What are some common themes in ASMR content?**

Some common themes in ASMR content include:

* Personal attention: A lot of people enjoy personal attention, which is why personal attention videos are quite common. This can range from things like haircuts, makeup applications, or even ear cleaning.
* Medical appointments: Similar to personal attention, people generally seem to enjoy the theme of a medical appointment. This could be anything from routine checks to getting a shot or having blood drawn.
* Cooking and baking: Cooking and baking are very common themes within the ASMR community. This can range from making a salad to baking a full-fledged cake.
* ASMR challenges: ASMR Challenges are tests designed to see how long a participant can last before experiencing an ASMR response. Challenges can be auditory, visual, tactile, or a combination of these.

**Is ASMR a therapy?**

No, ASMR is not a therapy! ASMR is not a treatment or a cure for any condition or illness. While it can often help people feel better, it is not a substitute for professional medical or therapeutic help. If you are struggling with a condition or illness, you should always consult a healthcare professional.

**Is ASMR a religion?**

No, ASMR is not a religion! ASMR is not a faith, nor is it a belief system. It is simply an acronym used to describe a tingling sensation that some people experience in response to certain auditory, visual, tactile, or other stimuli.

**Is ASMR a cult?**

No, ASMR is most definitely *not* a cult. There is no central authority figure, no rigid belief system, and no one telling you what you *must* believe. People in the ASMR community are simply just that – a community of people who share similar interests. Nothing more. Nothing less.
