Why do people talk about AGI like it’s going to be a piece of software?

I can’t tell if I’m just being too optimistic or if I’m missing something else, but it seems like a lot of people are treating AGI like it’s “okay to wait” and “it’ll be an awesome tool for our lives”.

AGI isn’t software. It’s not like buying a new phone with a fancy iOS, or downloading a new app that’s not really necessary. It isn’t even like buying a robot that you can use to clean your house.

AGI defines the end of a human era, and a new era of an unknown “alien” species. If you were to sit down and write a sci-fi story about the creation of AGI as an alien race coming to planet Earth, that’s what it’ll be like. It will have its own thoughts, morals, ethics, motivations, method of communication and incentives that are beyond our understanding.

It would be like someone saying “a meteor is going to hit planet Earth in 20 years, destroying the atmosphere”. It’s not like a phone that you can buy, it’s not like a new pair of shoes or some new cool headphones. It’s a game over, an extinction event. Just like a meteor would bring mass destruction to Earth’s ecosystem, AGI would be an extinction event to humans as a species.

Can someone explain what I’m missing here?
