I know this is based off a chambers post I read a short while back where a women was literally stalked by a guy she fired, and her only options were to get a restraining order or a gun. I did not previously know of this as I am not in the US.

Something you may not know is that people with ill intentions can sign you up for credit cards, loans, or other forms of credit and just never pay them off. This can lead to all kinds of fun and unpleasant financial surprises in the future, or getting denied credit because someone has used your name to sign up for a credit card (and isn't paying it off).

The only way to prevent this is to freeze your credit. This is done with the 3 majors credit reporting firms and is often a free service, and it is not based on income. THIS IS NOT THE SAME AS A CREDIT LOCK, WHICH CAN BE UNLOCKED BY PROOF OF ID. If you freeze your credit, even if someone brings your ID and pays the fee for a credit card or loan, the bank will not let them because your credit is frozen. This is not an insurance policy against credit card fraud, and it only works for identification based credit requests.

This is a good idea for 3 groups of people: people 18-25, people who have/had stalkers, people who are high risk for identity theft (i.e high income / high assets). If you think someone might be interested in ruining your credit based on a stalker or your wealth, it is 100% worth it.

This was a life tips post I learned on reddit. You never know who is going to tell you something that is going to save you money or hassle in the future.

TLDR: Freeze your credit, it's not as hard to do as it sounds and will save you hassle if you have ill intentioned people in your life.
