Perspective on buying a first house.

I've been thinking a lot about our decision, as a society, to consider buying a first house at our current stage of human civilization. So many things bother me about it and I wanted to share my thoughts with you.<br><br>Let's start with the obvious...the planet is dying. Everything we read and hear tells us that our future will be increasingly challenged by the effects of climate change. If we understand that buying a house is essentially a long term investment (typically 15-30 years), do we really think that the planet will be in a good place at the end of that period?<br><br>I understand that our generation is completely lost between older generations saying "you need to own a home to be financially secure" and the younger generations saying "you guys are ruining the planet". There's a lot of confusion between the two.<br><br>What's even more puzzling to me is the idea that the planet is running out of habitable land, yet the demand for housing is higher than ever. Why does everyone need to own their own home? I grew up in a small village with multi-generational homes (grandparents, children, grandchildren living all in one house).<br><br>I know I'm dreaming, but I wish that instead of building new homes, we could focus on building condominiums and apartments that are designed to be passed down through generations, while being energy efficient and sustainable.<br><br>I also want to question the notion of "resale value" when buying a first home. Wouldn't it be more logical to invest our money in sustainable and eco-friendly homes, even if they don't have a high resale value? This would allow us to take care of our planet and ensure a better future for our children.<br><br>In conclusion, I want to emphasize that I'm not a radical, anti-capitalist minimalist. I simply believe that we need to rethink our approach to buying a first home and consider the long-term implications for our planet's future.<br><br>What are your thoughts on this?
