Northern Ireland is an example of the future when the USA has been partitioned along ethnic and political lines.<br><br>When I read this post I was curious about the recent history of Northern Ireland, as it is completely foreign to me. I found it interesting and relevant to the topic of American Partition.<br><br>Here are some interesting points I found: <br><br>• Northern Ireland was partitioned from the rest of Ireland because of a Catholic/Protestant split in 1921. Although it still remains part of the UK, the Irish Free State, which later became Ireland, was established. <br><br>• “In 1937, the Irish Free State changed it’s name to Ireland. In 1948, it officially left the United Kingdom becoming the Republic of Ireland. In 1949, it became a republic.” <br><br>• “In 1969, Protestants and Catholics in Northern Ireland began fighting each other. The accompanying violence lasted into the 1990s.” <br><br>• “In 1986, the British government granted Irish citizenship to anyone born in Northern Ireland, even if they had been born before 1986.” <br><br>• “In 1997 the Good Friday Agreement ended the violence with a power-sharing government.” <br><br>• Brexit in 2016 caused more conflict between Northern Ireland and Ireland, but when the UK left the EU, the Irish government has put up border control. <br><br>• “Since 2019, Northern Ireland has been governed by the Northern Ireland Executive.” <br><br>• “In 2021, violence returned with riots in Northern Ireland in April, and in May, unionists attacked homes of nationalists in loyalist areas of Newtownabbey.” <br><br>Summary: Northern Ireland was partitioned off from the rest of Ireland in 1921 due to religious beliefs, which in turn led to more bloodshed throughout the years. While the Good Friday Agreement did put an end to it, this shows that partitioning isn’t a simple solution, in fact, it’s quite the opposite. <br><br>Edit: <br><br>This post is not saying that religion is the only difference between the political parties. I am not trying to imply that at all. Northern Ireland was simply an example of a country that was partitioned along ethnic, political, and religious lines and more conflict has ensued because of this.
