A man who was (somehow) able to get into my house spoke to me in the middle of the night, right next to my bed.

I was sleeping in my bedroom at my parent's house (it's a 1 story ranch style house with a pretty open floor plan) when in the middle of the night, a voice said "Hi" to me.

I'm a pretty deep sleeper and have always been able to sleep through anything, except this voice.

It scared the crap out of me. I jumped up out of bed in a "fight or flight" mode and turned on my lamp to see no one. I gave the usual "hello?" And got no answer. I thought it was my mom or dad messing with me but when I went to check, they were fast asleep.

I didn't think too much of it, until the voice said hello again. This time, it sent chills down my spine. I turned my lamp back on to see nobody again. I went back to check my parents again, who were still fast asleep. I started to freak out a little, thinking maybe I was dreaming or something, so I went back to bed.

I tried to go back to sleep, but I just couldn't. Every little noise made me jump. I was terrified something was in my room. After about 30 minutes of lying awake, the voice said "Hi" again.

This time, I couldn't take it anymore. I yelled at the top of my lungs "MOM!" and ran to my parents bedroom. When I got there, I saw my mom and dad scared to death, asking me what was going on. I explained what had happened and they didn't believe me. They thought I was overreacting to a dream I had, but when I wouldn't stop crying and wouldn't leave their room, they decided to search the house. They found nobody, and still didn't really believe me that someone was there.

Fast forward a few days, my mom and dad were in the kitchen when they saw one of my old cookies laying on the floor. Thinking it was me who had left it there, they asked me about it. My reply was "I don't like cookies. Why would I have one?" That made them curious, so they asked my brother if he had left a cookie on the floor. My brother has a terrible cookie addiction, so my parents thought it made sense for him to be eating cookies. We all knew that my brother was at work though, and that he had left for work hours before my parents were in the kitchen. This peaked my parents interest even more, so they decided to investigate. They checked the cookies jar, only to find it was slightly ajar. My brother has this really annoying habit of closing the cookies jar so tightly that you need to literally use all your strength to open it. Whoever had opened the cookies jar had definitely left it ajar, loosely. Now I'm not trying to bash my brother or anything, but he has a really bad habit of always closing things really tightly (it was actually really frustrating and I'm glad whoever it was didn't close the cookies jar that way). They thought it was weird, but still didn't really think anything of it. I'm not sure why they thought it was normal for an invisible intruder to be eating cookies, but it is what it is.

Fast forward a few more days. My mom was in the kitchen, again. This time she found a half-eaten box of cake mix on the floor. She couldn't figure out who had left it there, until she saw that someone had literally mixed up an entire box of cake and eaten it like it was a cookie. This time, my parents immediately thought back to when I told them about someone saying "hello" to me. They were wondering if maybe someone had been in the house. They decided to investigate a little more, and that's when they found out that someone had gotten into our house.

I'm not sure if anyone else knows how a locked door works, but once you lock the door, it won't open unless you unlock it. Whoever was in our house was able to get in somehow, even though all our doors and windows were locked.

It's been years now, and I don't live in that house anymore, but I still can't get over the fact that a random person who somehow got into our house spoke to me in the middle of the night. Whoever that was, let's not meet again.
