My husband and I are both 30 years old. Why does it feel like were both supposed to be making more money at this point?

I'm a nurse practitioner. I work part time with irregular hours and make about $120,000/ yr. I have about $60,000 in student loans at 5% interest and $25,000 in credit card debt at 22% interest. I also have a 401(k) account with around $40,000 in it. All of our debt has been accumulated in the last two years. I am working on it now, but it's not being paid off as fast as I would like. I live in a big city that is very expensive and my husband and I bought a small condo 5 years ago.

My husband is a cardiothoracic surgeon. He's an attending now, but had a pretty hard time getting a job in the area we wanted to live in. It took about a year for him to find something. He makes about $450,000/yr. He has about $150,000 in student loans at 5% interest. He also has about $10,000 in credit card debt at 22% interest. We also both have cars with loans. We both have 401(k) type accounts and contribute 10-15% of our income to them.

This year is the first year my husband has made a decent amount of money after being a resident for years. He's doing fellowship this year and makes about $100,000, but it ends in June and he will start making around $450,000 after that. He's been making good money for only a few months now and I'm just starting to get out of debt after years of accruing it.

It just feels like we should have more money at this point. I don't know where all of our money is going. I feel happy that I can finally start saving but I feel like we should have more money and be in better financial standing than we are at this point.
