How do you guys protect your work from being stolen?

I ask because I just sent my work to a writing group on Facebook and I'm really nervous it's going to get stolen. I'm being told there's not really a copyright process to protect your work and it's a bit of a headache. Am I being paranoid or is there a way to protect my story?
