My autistic cousin is non-verbal. But he’s not ‘happy’ all the time

I want to preface with this with the fact that I love my cousin very much.

He’s autistic and is non verbal. He can’t take care of himself so my aunt and uncle are his full time carers.

Anyways I’ve always been told by other family members that he’s always happy because of autism.

When he gets upset and hits himself, he’s ‘just autistic - he can’t communicate and he’s happy’.

When he is anooyed by a sound, he’s ‘just autistic - he’s happy’.

He was so stressed out at church one day (I think he just wanted go outside and do his own thing) and he screamed and cried and spun around. His carer at the time, and many family just said ‘oh, he’s autistic’. Not ‘oh, he’s clearly not happy and needs attention, maybe we should leave with him or sit away from him for a bit and give him more space’.

Every time he has a melt down because he’s not happy, everyone says he’s fine.

I want to say something to them but I’m also worried they’ll be offended. And I don’t know what else to say. I don’t know what to do.
