How would you rank creativity in the arts?

I was a theatre arts major who gave it up. I was a creative writing major who gave it up. I used to think, totally naively, that a degree in one or the other would make me an exceptionally creative person. Spoiler alert: not really. When I try to write creatively outside of work, I basically just rip off whatever I read the last time I read. So I only read academic things now because the words are jargon-y, and no one is there to catch me.

Since I feel that I have little personal creativity, I have to go to outside sources for inspiration. This got me wondering how you all rank creativity when it comes to other arts. I have always believed that writing is one of the least creative, because as long as you have a basis in a language, your tools are right there. And the execution of your art is probably something like 50% pure directorial ability, 30% support and execution by others, and 20% creativity. Within theatre, I would say acting is the same, costumes and props, 80% creativity, 20% directorial ability. The more technical aspects of theatre are probably 40% directorial ability, 60% creativity.

In visual arts, I think painting and drawing and things like that are still just about 60% creativity, 40% skill. And the execution of your art is mostly up to your own abilities, with some input from outside sources. Sculpture is probably the same. Photography is probably only around 30% creativity, since the execution is mostly up to the use of a machine to produce an end-product, and a whole lot of other people are involved, even if they don’t know it, like the subject. Within photography, I feel that fashion photography is the least creative, portrait photography is a little more creative, but only a small amount. I think fine art photography is probably the most creative because it doesn’t necessarily have to be a faithful representation of some person or thing. It’s also less likely to have outside direction, because fine art photography isn’t necessarily for a client. Film would be 70% directorial ability, only around 30% creativity, maybe even less. I know this isn’t what most filmmakers feel about their own work, but I just can’t buy that it’s 100% personal creative vision.

Music is a little bit harder. I’ve always kind of felt that music is only around 50% creativity, since a lot of it has to do with the technical aspects of an instrument. But there are also a lot of creative tools within music. I think what people tend to overlook is that the lyrics are actually more creative than the instrument. If you play an instrument, you still have to learn a lot of technical things, but there is a lot of room for creativity. But if you write, you have to know the language already, so it’s already less work to begin with. Unless you’re an opera singer, I guess. Voice is a little bit trickier, since you kind of already have the instrument, but there is still a lot of technical skill that goes into it. I personally feel that the music industry is actually not that creative, since it’s all based on the trends of the day. I think that folk music is more creative than pop music because it’s less about the technical things and more about the personal expression of the singer, which tends to be more creative. And the musical aspects of it, I believe, tend to be more outside the box of what is considered the norm. Jazz is probably more creative than both. But I’m not a musician, so maybe I’m wrong. I could be totally off. But I just think that creativity is not that important in music, it’s just the execution that matters. People like what sounds good, not necessarily what is technically creative.

Dance is a lot like music. Pretty technical, but lots of room for creativity. I would say that ballet is the least creative, contemporary is a little more creative, modern and expressive dance is more creative, but not the most. I think hip hop is probably the most creative, simply because it’s based on a freestyle expression, and because it incorporates other art forms like spoken word and rap and graffiti. It’s an all-encompassing genre that has more than one outlet.

But I don’t know. I don’t really know anything about the other art forms. This is just how I see it. How do you rank it?
