I work at NASA. I have some good news and some bad news

I work in Mission Control at NASA. One of the things my department is in charge of is monitoring the cameras that are mounted on the outside of the ISS.

Our job is to make sure they are functioning properly and to replace them when they break. It’s pretty boring, and there usually isn’t anything interesting to see. Earth, stars, space trash, and the occasional moon.

That all changed on Tuesday.

That was the day a spacewalk was scheduled for. Two astronauts were going out to replace a camera that had broken. Nothing out of the ordinary for us. I was stationed in one of the rooms that has all of the monitors that display the feeds from the cameras.

There’s usually 8 of us in the room at a time, each monitoring a few cameras, but for spacewalks there are 12 of us in there with our eyes glued to the screens.

Before the spacewalk started, I noticed something strange on one of the feeds. It was a small, dark shape, floating in space away from the station. I couldn’t make out any details, but it gave me weird vibes.

It was gone before I got a good look, and I didn’t even think about it again until the two astronauts were outside station and one said, “What is that out there?”

There was a pause from the CapCom (the person at Mission Control who talks to the astronauts), then they replied, “What is where?”

“One of the cameras is pointing at some kinda blotch in space. Looks pretty far away though.”

I immediately started going through the cameras to see if I could find the one they were talking about. After a few seconds, I found it. It looked like the same thing I had seen earlier.

I remembered that the camera the astronauts were talking about was the one that had been acting up lately. I couldn’t help but wonder if this new discovery was somehow connected.

I got sidetracked thinking about that, and I stayed that way until I heard one of my coworkers gasp rather loudly.

I looked over at her screen and it had the blotch. But it was closer.

I got up and walked over to her console, and as I was walking I saw it on other screens. The astronauts were talking about it, and the CapCom was telling them to stay focused on the task at hand.

Then, the unthinkable happened.

I watched in amazement as a spaceship came into view on one of the screens. It passed by the camera so quickly that I wasn’t able to see any details.

One of the astronauts exclaimed, “What the actual holy fuck! What is that?!”

There was a long, tense silence from the CapCom.

The Astronauts were getting more and more excited. “Why aren’t you guys saying anything! What’s going on? What is that??”

Finally, the CapCom said, “We are aware of the... situation... We will be halting the spacewalk early. Please make your way back to the airlock.”

I couldn’t believe what I was seeing on my screen. Hundreds of spaceships, all different shapes and sizes, were passing by.

The astronauts were almost back to the airlock when one said, “What the hell am I looking at?”

I looked back at my coworkers screen, and my heart sank.

“Folks, we need to hur-” was all the CapCom got out before the feed cut out.

I looked around the room at my coworkers, speechless.

We all knew what had just happened.

I rushed out of the room, along with a few others, to find out more information. Nobody else knew anything more than we did, but there was a commotion towards the front of Mission Control.

I worked my way through the crowd, until I got close enough to see that there was a monitor on the floor, busted up.

Above where the monitor had been, I saw exactly what I had seen on that camera monitor.

Spaceships. Hundreds of them. Thousands of them.

Passing by, one after the other.

The room was silent, with the only noise coming from the murmur of the crowd.

Someone behind me said, “Why didn’t they tell us about this? This could have at least been a cool secret to be in on.”

I thought about that, and I realized something.

If they had told us about this, there’s no way we could keep it secret.

There are too many people at NASA for something like this to be kept secret.

Then it hit me.

That’s why I’m posting this.

They can’t keep it a secret.

We have to tell the world.

And I think I’m going to stop typing now.

I hear people coming down the hallway.
