What was the nature of the relationship between the Ottoman Empire and the Safavid Empire in the 16th century?

The Safavid Empire rose in the early 1500s based on being a Shia state, while the Ottoman Empire was a Sunni state. The two clearly were religious rivals in the region at the time, but to what extent were they rivals in general?
