If you don't think you're productive, you should change your perception of what productivity is.

Hey everyone!

I used to be someone who would sincerely and proudly say that I'm not productive at all, that's just not who I am. I'm lazy, I don't get anything done, I'm not a morning person, I don't get up until it's late, I wish I could be someone who gets up at 5 AM, but that's just not who I am.

For years, I believed that I wasn't productive, and that I could never be a productive person. Until I began doing some research into productivity, because I was so tired of barely getting by in everything that I do and wanted to be someone who got things done. After reading a lot, I learned one very important thing:

Being productive is just doing something productive. Anything.

I don't feel productive when I do chores. I don't feel productive when I get up at 5 AM (okay, that's a little extreme, but 6, 7, 8 are all the same).

We all have different things that make us feel productive. Some people are those hyper-productive, getting up at 5 AM, doing yoga, running, journaling, getting a lot of work done before lunch, etc. I am not that person. The earliest I can get up is 8:30 AM (unless I have some sort of a shift that I have to get up for, which is rare), and I'm not a morning person. I don't feel productive when I do things early in the day.

But, I am a productive person. I am someone who works hard, sets a lot of goals, and sets a lot of timelines. I have multiple jobs, and I'm a full-time student in University. I'm not lazy, and I feel really fulfilled and in control of my life. But, I also rest a lot. I don't push myself to work super hard and to do a lot of things every single day. I don't overwork myself. And that is okay.

For me, being productive is not doing a lot of yoga and eating healthy and drinking water. It's doing what I know I have to do to get somewhere in life. And, that might not be for everyone, but that works for me.

But, for a lot of people, the things that make me feel productive wouldn't make them feel productive at all. My idea of productivity is not everyone's idea of productivity.

Getting up at 10:30 AM, whether I have a shift or not, is productive. Making time to go for a walk and drink coffee is productive. Waking up every morning at a certain time and going straight to the gym is productive. Having a special coffee drink every morning that makes you feel good is productive. Getting up at 6 AM and drinking a whole bottle of water is productive.

If you believe that you are not productive, that's okay. It's okay to not be productive in the way that you expect yourself to be, and it's okay to take your time to figure out what works for you. Everyone's different, and we all have different obligations and responsibilities that we have to attend to.

Productivity is about being productive. It's about being someone who gets things done. And, trust me, there's a way of doing that that works for you.

It has taken me over 20 years to realize that I'm actually a productive person. I'm in control of my life, I work hard, I set timelines and goals, and I do everything that I can to live a fulfilling life. And, I'm also someone who enjoys my time. I can do both.

We all have different obligations that we have to fulfill. It's not the same for everyone. We have different jobs, different circumstances, different abilities, different responsibilities. It's not fair to compare your productivity to someone else's, because chances are you're in a completely different situation.

You have to find out what works for you, and what doesn't work for you. And, know that it's okay to take your time to do so.

Everyone's different, and it's okay to not be productive in the way that you expect. I thought I knew what a productive person looks like, but I was completely wrong. I am not someone who I would consider to be a productive person. But, I am a productive person! I'm not lazy, and I get things done.

I guess what I want to say is that you should not compare your productivity to other people's productivity. You have to compare it to your own. Look at who you were last week, last month, last year, five years ago. Are you in a better spot than you were? Are you more in control of your life? Do you feel like you're working hard and getting things done?

That's what's important.

Thank you for reading!
