What's the rule if you find a pregnant stray cat?

I've heard that cats do not (can not?) spontaneously abort, so I imagine the rule is that you give it a litter and then spay it afterwards, but I can't find anything confirming that (e.g. in a given location, if you trap, spay and release then you do that regardless of pregnancy).
