Meta used to be known for its social media business, but it is now rebranding as an AI company In the past nine months, OpenAI, a company that was very new to most people, has become a mainstream part of many people’s lives. In a bid to compete, Meta has unveiled a new AI – known for short as Llama 3.5 Turbo – that will eventually be integrated into its platforms. The new technology can answer questions, create images, generate code, perform complex tasks and more. But despite its capabilities, Meta is encouraging people not to rely solely on it. --- In an interview with BBC News, Joelle Pineau, vice-president at Meta AI, said: “We want to get to a point where the AI is able to do the really hard things – help with health and education and that sort of thing. “But there’s a responsibility that comes with that, and we want to get to a point where we can control and predict how the AI responds. “At the moment we want to look at how people use it in a variety of settings, and how it affects people’s lives and jobs.” This isn’t the first time the company has released AI technology to the public, but they say this one is a major progression. Introducing Meta AI The technology will initially be released as a part of Meta’s Ray-Ban smart glasses. You can ask it to do a variety of things by talking to it – such as giving you directions, creating images and producing poetry. The technology will also be integrated into other platforms such as Instagram and Facebook – with a long-term goal of becoming part of people’s daily lives. It is still unclear when these changes will be rolled out, but what is clear is that people are more open to adopting AI technology than they were just six months ago. The company has also set up a website to track how the new AI affects everyday life. A new wave of AI technology The boom in generative AI began in November, when OpenAI released ChatGPT to the public. Since then, more generative AI technology has begun to roll out – including Google Gemini and Microsoft’s Copilot chatbot. Microsoft’s Copilot, like Meta AI, can complete tasks and answer questions – and it’s due to be rolled out to millions of users later this year. Mark Zuckerberg and Satya Nadella The AI boom has also led to a new dynamic between tech companies – for example, Meta and Microsoft have previously been competitors. However, they are now able to collaborate with more ease. Meta boss Mark Zuckerberg and Microsoft chief Satya Nadella have spoken about their new dynamic. In a post on X, Mr Zuckerberg said: “The really cool thing about AI is it’s just about what can people make. “You can be so creative about what you do because you’re able to do all this stuff.” Mr Nadella said: “I’m actually thrilled by the number of new entrants – really good entrants coming in – and they are coming in to lift what’s there, so I think we’re better as a result of that.” Google Gemini Generative AI is becoming more and more a part of everyday life – and tech companies are investing heavily in the technology. In a bid to compete, Google has released Gemini – which the company says is the most advanced AI to be released yet. In a presentation, Google vice-president Kevin Scott said the AI was “a massive improvement on previous systems. “What used to take people decades of training, we can teach it in about a minute. “Gemini really actually understands what it means to do all of this stuff.” Gemini is also going to be rolled out, initially in beta form, to one million users before wider release. The technology is already integrated in to Google’s toolbar – an example of which was shown in a presentation. Though the AI boom has seen rapid progression – it still remains unclear how generative AI will affect long-term jobs and industries.
