I have a full on, anaphalactic allergy to shellfish. I also have a mild dairy intolerance. Neither are self diagnosed. Both were diagnosed via my primary care physician. My allergy is so severe I have to carry an epi-pen.

Last weekend I visited my friend “Mike” in Nashville. I haven’t seen Mike in 2 years so when he invited me to one of his favorite seafood restaurants I told him no. He said to just avoid the seafood and then accused me of being a picky eater. I explained that there was a high risk of cross contamination at a seafood place and just being in the restaurant for too long (hours) might cause a reaction. Again, he basically called me a liar and said that I was being paranoid.

The next day he invited me to go to a trendy vegan cafe with him. I said no but asked why he chose that. He said that he’s not a vegan but prefers the food at that one in particular. I pointed out that I wasn’t a shellfish eater (lol) but he asked me to avoid it at the seafood place, which I would’ve gladly done if it were safe. He didn’t like that and basically accused me of trying to make a big deal of my allergies.
