I am curious and a bit amused by the sheer number of non-native English speakers (particularly in Latin America and India) that are learning these now often fringe-to-minority languages and not French, Chinese and Arabic (or Russian, for that matter) that are good for your career and are super useful to speak globally.

This question is particularly aimed at those of you who do not have a direct connection to these cultures (either relatives, living in the country or married to someone from there) and are in no way going to live in one of these countries.

I understand why the UK is the biggest market, because of courses related to arts and the like, as well as possible free university education and cheap living overseas. I also understand why you do not want to live in the US, because of the costs and society overall.

I would like to know what drives the curiosity of learning these Germanic and North European languages.
