Why does Chambers hate language learning apps so much?

Im finding it very strange, that whenever I ask for advice on language learning apps, the majority of the comments are along the lines of "they're useless", "they can't help", in some cases, active hostility towards people who dare to use such apps.

I understand that apps aren't perfect. But I don't get the level of disdain that people have for them. For those of us who live in areas where language classes are either expensive, or non-existent (for certain languages), apps can be a great way to start building a foundation in those languages. Yes, it's not perfect, and there will be mistakes, but at the end of the day, I'd rather know the basics of a language and make mistakes instead of knowing nothing.

Human connection is important, I agree, and apps can't replicate that. But for those of us who don't have that luxury, what choice do we have? Does that make us inferior learners?

I use apps, and I do speak to natives, attend concerts, watch tv and films in the target language, read books in the target language... it may not be the preferred method for some, but in certain situations, that's the only realistic path to learning.
