Can philosophy be made more accessible and easier to understand? If so, how?

I am a professor at a university that prides itself on undergraduate education and teaching. I teach philosophy, and I have always assumed that the audience for my work is students, first and foremost, and general public secondarily. One of the central aims of my own philosophy is to make philosophy as accesssible as possible and to write well. I recently gave a presentation in this vein at the American Philosophical Association.

But at the same event, I was told by some that philosophy is not for everyone, that it is mostly for the initiated. I was told that philosophy is pursued by only a few, and that most people do not need to read philosophy or engage with it. It is not unlike classical music in this regard, that it is a niche pursuit.
Granted, I was talking to philosophers, and the philosophical method requires some level of sophistication and background knowledge. Granted too, not everyone wants to engage with philosophy. But I think that it should be generally available if it is to be a resource for all. What do you think?
