My 10 year old nephew is not a minimalist, but he has one key insight that minimalists know too.

I was staying with my brother and his son for a week. My nephew is a total little shit, but he is also extremely loving. I love the little motherfucker, but he also infuriates me.

I was cooling off with a 10 minute drive in the car when I found myself checking my phone and looking around to make sure I had everything with me. That’s when I remembered what my nephew said about his stepdad: “Daaaad, you don’t need a wallet. You have your id, your credit cards, and your cash. Why put them in a wallet? Just put them in your pocket!”

And it’s true. He DOESN’T need a wallet. I also don’t need to check my phone so much when I’m driving around by myself.

This is the fundamental insight that minimalists have: your categories are not as rigid or necessary as you think they are.
