I feel defeated and I do not know what else to do.

I have 3 5th grade English classes. Only 12 kids per class, first year teacher, 26 years old, female and I try to get down to their level when it comes to the curriculum.

First hour is really hard because they only listen to their male TA’s. They don’t listen to me at all and I have tried being stern and strict but nothing works! Class is often disrupted because of this. They will obey when report cards are threatened but I do not feel comfortable using that as a punishment.

Second hour is my best class, but some kids often leave their homework at home or do not do it. They are more willing to listen.

Third hour is my “special ed” class. I have 7 kids with adhd and one with autism. They do not listen to me at all when I ask them to come to the front of the classroom. I will ask nicely and they just say “no” and walk away. I have asked my principal to sit in but nothing has changed.

In general I have a really hard time getting them to listen and do their work. Most of them are focused on acting as grown men. I am just over this already and I am considering quitting. Any advice would be great.

Edit:

Ok people are confused about the TA thing so I’m gonna clear that up- this is a magnet school and it is required they get extra help. The kids are not allowed to leave campus and they want more help so they go to the TA room, which I am responsible for. I am also an English TA which is why I have three classes.

I just split them up to give them a chance to open up to me since I let them have a movie day (with a worksheet) and they came back to class super energetic .
