A stranger in the back of my car

One evening in 2011, I was driving home from work. It was probably 5:30, so there was still plenty of light out and I wasn't particularly nervous. I was a pretty new driver, 16 years old, and was driving alone because I had stayed late to talk to a teacher.

I was driving down the highway at about 70mph, passing through a relatively urban area. I was in the middle lane and had just passed someone when I heard a rustling noise behind me. I looked in my rear view mirror and saw a man rummaging through my back seat, probably going through my gym bag.

I honestly cannot even remember what I thought or how I felt. It was like my brain just locked up. I didn't even check my mirrors when I pulled over to the side of the road. All I remember is how fast my heart was racing and that somehow I managed to call 911 and get out of the car at the same time. I held my car door open with my left hand and held my phone in my right hand, and I was positively shaking like a leaf.

The guy in my backseat glanced at me and then sat up. That's when I saw him more clearly. He was a white guy with a scraggly beard and a baseball cap. He had a very smug look on his face and crossed his arms. He looked like he owned the place.

I told the 911 operator my location and he assured me someone was on the way. The guy in my car was just staring at me and I started to get more and more nervous. I saw that the guy in the car behind me was getting out of his car. I motioned for him to stay back, and he asked me if I was okay. I explained the situation and he Stayed by me.

The guy in my car started to move towards me. I told him the cops were on the way and that I was going to scream really loud if he came any closer. He sneered and then exited through the other door and walked away. I didn't see where he went and I didn't really care. I was still shaking and crying by the time the cops showed up. They took my statement and gave me a sheet to fill out, but I never heard anything come of it.

I never saw that guy again. Maybe he was just looking to steal something. But what if he had attacked me? What if that guy in the car behind me hadn't been there? I don't even want to think about it.

I don't care if you were just looking to steal something, you were in my car and scared the shit out of me. Let's not meet again.
