I’m a high schooler involved in a university-preparatory program. To qualify for such a program a student must take an English proficiency test. To do so a student must write a composite essay. The question for such a test is: “What does the study of language and literature provide for you as a learner that other subjects don’t, and what do you believe will be the result of this?”
I would love feedback.
I’ve only gotten an A when I’ve turned it in, but the teachers that grade it are only halfway through their high school degree.

In English class, we have the privilege of studying the magical realm of language and literature, and for me, it has been an extraordinary journey. The study of language and literature goes beyond the boundaries of academic subjects such as mathematics and science; it takes a deeper meaning than the study of foreign languages or social studies. Language and literature intertwines the study of all things, and so it provides for me as a learner a window on the world, allowing me to explore the depths of the mind, to traverse the realms of reality and fantasy, and to broaden my perspectives on the world. Throughout this journey, I have learned much about myself and the world around me.

To begin with, the study of language and literature has allowed me to explore the depths of my own mind. As I have read through the works of Shakespeare and contemporary authors I have been given the tools to understand myself and the world around me. Language and literature allows for individual interpretation; it encourages me to search for my own meaning in a piece of text, for every reader interprets language and literature differently. There is no right or wrong; one interpretation is just as valuable as any other. Throughout my years of study I have discovered through the works of Shakespeare that I am very introverted, and so I often find myself lost in my own thoughts and imagination. I have also discovered that I have many flaws, but I am persevering to overcome them. For example, I have always had a sharp tongue, and I have learned to control it. I have also learned to persevere through difficult tasks. Without the study of language and literature, I may have never discovered these things about myself.

Moreover, the study of language and literature has allowed me to traverse the realms of reality and fantasy. Literature has the power to transport us to different places, different eras, and different worlds. I have learned to use my imagination to picture the worlds that I read about. This has allowed me to see the world in a new light and to picture the endless possibilities that exist. For example, the fictional world of Narnia, created by CS Lewis, has given me the ability to imagine the endless possibilities that exist within reality and beyond. I can picture the endless realms of mountains that line the horizon, as well as the endless blue waters that fill the seas. I am able to imagine magical worlds beyond reality. I am able to picture talking animals and mythical creatures. Without the study of literature, this ability to imagine would not have been gifted to me. Imagination is the ability to imagine and create things that aren’t real. To lose such an ability is to lose the true meaning of life. We must always be able to imagine; it is a vital tool in everyday life. It may seem so, but it is truly vital to hold on to imagination throughout our lives. As adults, imagination is the difference between us and the animals. To lose such an ability is to lose our humanity.

Finally, the study of language and literature has allowed me to broaden my perspectives on the world. I have learned to study the world through the eyes of many different authors and cultures. I have learned to study the works of popular Canadian authors, as well as the works of popular international authors. There is a certain beauty in international works, for they allow us to see the world through the eyes of others. Perhaps the most beautiful of international works are those of Shakespeare. Shakespeare’s works are grand, beautiful, and meaningful, and they have allowed me to traverse the realms of reality and fantasy. His works are timeless; they will be studied by individuals for centuries to come, and his works are still contemporary. I am able to see the world through the eyes of an Englishman. I am able to picture his homeland and all of the beauty that it holds within. I am able to imagine the great mountains of Ireland, as well as the great mountains of Scotland. I am able to imagine the great waters that separate the continents. I am able to picture the great cities of England, including London. I am able to imagine the great monuments of England, such as Stonehenge. I am able to picture the great English countryside. Shakespeare’s works have taught me to study all things with great detail, for I am able to picture the beauty of everything. Without his works, I may have never been able to traverse the realms of reality and fantasy. His works have given me the tools to imagine, and without it this essay would not have been possible.

In conclusion, the study of language and literature provides for me as a learner a window on the world, allowing me to explore the depths of the mind, to traverse the realms of reality and fantasy, and to broaden my perspectives on the world. Through the study of language and literature I have learned much about myself and the world around me. I believe that the study of language and literature is vital for academic success, and for everyday life.
