The man who taught me to always lock the door

I wasn't originally going to post this but after reading the story about the guy who was in the wardrobe, it made me think of my own experience that happened when I was about 18 (I'm in my 40s now).

When I was in high school, I lived on an island in an extremely small town. I didn't have a car and it was a 10 minute drive to the nearest neighbourhood so it was impossible to get around without one. But being 18, I had male friends who were also 18 and also had cars.

One of the guys I was seeing at the time spent the night at my place and then had to get up early to go to work. I didn't drive at the time (I still don't, haha) so my plan was to walk to school (abt 15 min walk) at the end of the street. But he offered to drive me which I thought was sweet.

The only issue was that it was 6am at the time and he would be driving past the school at around 6:45 which meant I would be standing outside the school for at least 45 minutes before the teachers came to unlock it. But he insisted that it was okay so I just grabbed my bag and left with him.

He dropped me off and drove away without even saying goodbye. I was annoyed but I stopped myself from letting it get to me and decided to just head back home. It was only 6:45 and I didn't have to be at school until 9 so I figured I had plenty of time.

I walked back to the end of the street and walked down my street, greeted my neighbour and walked in my front door. I flipped on the TV and got comfortable on the couch and waited for it to hit 8:30 so I could leave again.

A few minutes later, I heard someone fiddling with the door handle. I looked at the clock, and it was around 7:05. I'm thinking to myself, this must be the guy I was with last night, coming back to apologise for being an ass.

The door was almost open when I heard him say "oh shit". I looked over and it was not the guy I was with last night, it was a man I had never seen before. He slammed the door shut and ran off.

I called the police and they took down all my information but never did anything with it. But it taught me a lesson to never leave a door unlocked, even if you can see someone fiddling around with it.

Tweet this and share it on Facebook to tell all your friends how I almost got robbed!

EDIT: I also realise that it was probably a random neighbourhood kid who had been going around doing this, given that it was a small town
