I'm British and I get how many americans are feeling on here right now.

This election result is a repeat of a past event that happened in the UK.

An important point to remember is that the UK is still currently recovering from Brexit and I'm sure many of you can see that a similar path is now being trodden by America.

So we've been there and we've done our best to recover, we have learned a lot down that path and know where we went wrong, so I thought I'd make this thread to pass on some of the advice we have to give about how to deal with the situation.

First of all, the next few days are going to be exceptionally bleak. The sadness you guy's are going to feel is indescribable and it's not unheard of for people to sink into a serious depression that's hard to get out of. I'm not going to say it is going to be okay because right now it's not. Your country has been pushed further down the path of insanity.

The first thing I want to say is that you should let yourself feel the pain. Do not try to bottle it up because it will burn inside of you and fuel your anger, and as we all know anger only leads to more problems. You need to let yourself feel the pain and let it go, something my family struggled to do, my mother still hasn't let go and I think that is impacting her self worth.

The second thing I want to say is that you should make a plan for your future, where you want to be and how you're going to get there. This will help you cope with the initial aftermath of the election and it will also give you something to focus on that isn't what is happening to your country. I'm not saying this will make it better, but it did help me so I'm hoping it will help you.

The third thing I want to say, is be where the action is. If you want to make a change in your country you need to be near where the decisions are being made. For America that will obviously be DC, for me it was London. I'm not saying it will be easy, I'm not saying you'll succeed, but you won't succeed if you're far away from where everything is happening. You need to be there.

Fourth thing, you need to focus on your own recovery as much as your countries recovery. I'm not saying it will be a hard task, but it is something you need to keep in mind and not something you should ignore. Life is a work in progress and everyone has a journey to follow. America's story still has many more chapters, and yours does too.

Fifth thing, and this is the most important thing I want to say to you. You can't let hate fester inside of you. If America is going to recover from the damage that trump has caused it, you need to show the people who have divided you that you're not going to let hate fuel you. You need to show compassion and empathy to those who voted for trump. You need to show them that you don't hate them, you hate what trump is doing, you hate what trump has said and you hate what trump is. A house divided is never strong and you need a strong house to recover. I know it is hard, but you need to care about those who disagree with you and you need to show them that you do.
