Polishing languages via audiobooks on YouTube

I found a peculiar way to improve fluency and vocabulary in a language I already know relatively well.

I can’t call it a “method,” as I’m just going along with things, but still:

I’ve recently discovered that YouTube has a channel that posts audiobooks (Polish language). I prefer audio to video, as it allows me to keep doing other things with my hands (not that I multitask all the time, as that’s not the goal, but when I do a chore, I prefer to multitask). They have audiobooks of books that I’m not too interested in, but for some reason, I still listen to them for the few hours they are available on YouTube. Audiobooks are 4-5 hours each. Unfortunately, they don’t post audiobooks frequently.

I was excited to learn Polish. I’ve recently bought PolishPod101. I bought it when I had a beginner level, and it was spontaneously helpful when I was browsing YouTube and accidentally clicked on a Polish channel with Polish language subtitles on. I didn’t know Polish at the time, and that’s how I learned a few basic vocabulary words.

For a short time, I applied consistent effort, like watching one video a day, using Duolingo, and then doing some PolishPod101. It helped, and I even started to recognize similarities between Polish and Ukrainian.

However, in the past 2-3 weeks, I didn’t do much. One day, I stumbled upon an audiobook, and then there were updates on that YouTube channel. I’m currently listening to the third audiobook. That’s 12 hours of listening to Polish. I’m glad that audiobooks are “popular,” and now there’s a channel with audiobooks for kids.

Audiobooks keep me engaged and help me focus on my surroundings. Sometimes I imagine a Polish person speaking to me and reacting to what they say. Therefore, I “answer” them mentally or just react. I don’t know if it’s a common thing, but when I listen to audio content in a foreign language, I often imagine a person speaking.

Overall, I just wanted to share how I accidentally found a peculiar way to improve fluency in a language.

P.S. I’m now addicted to listening to audiobooks in Polish. It’s not that they’re too much fun, but it’s nice to have an entertainment for my ears. I just want to find more audiobooks.
