What does it take to be a good breeder?

I see a lot here about bad breeders, dogs that are physically ruined because of breeding, and owners sharing what a bad situation they have with their dog. I've seen some good breeders with well done sites and speaking about health testing, sharing breeder reports, but I feel like it's worth asking because I feel like it's worth asking.

I have a dog that is a very good dog, but his mom is not a "good" dog as far as the dogs ability to be a good companion. She also doesn't look like a show dog, she has the wrong coat, because the dad is a crossbreed dog, his dad was also a crossbreed dog, and this is part of the issue with the line. So I'd love to know how to tell a good breeder from a bad breeder, how do you know if you should get a dog from someone.

Edit: I'm a bit surprised at how many good comments, thank you. I'm reading through everything, I found a few links that helped, I'm going to start working on everything, and I'll be in touch with a few of you. Thank you again
