Does anyone else find it ironic that doctors don't actually know how most of the drugs they prescribe work?

I have this realization every time I read about any drug. It will explain how it is absorbed, the "believed" mechanism of action, and the effects it has. It baffles me that our doctors don't actually know how a majority of the drugs they give us work.

I know drugs interact differently with people and have to be altered. But I would be uncomfortable taking something prescribed to me if the doctor doesn't even know how it works.
