ELI5: Why do TV stories have to wait until the last commercial before anything good happens?

I always get very excited because it seems everything good happens right before the end of the show, and then the commercial comes so then the next season you have to pay for it because they don't put it on Hulu or Netflix or Sling TV. It seems like they only want money and not viewers.
