I'm a 42 year old mom of 3, a 16 year old daughter, a 6 year old son, and a 2 year old son. My daughter had a school dance on a Friday night, she asked her boyfriend to go, and my husband and I said it was ok as long as she was home before midnight.

My sons and I were playing in the living room, I told them to quiet down and go to bed, it was a little before midnight, my daughter arrived as I finished putting my youngest to bed. She went to change into her comfortable clothes so she could watch a movie with us in the living room.

I was in the kitchen making a snack when I heard my daughter say "hello". I turned and said "oh really? Look who decided to show up" and saw a guy I didn't recognize. I made a confused face at my daughter, trying to figure out who this was and why he was at my house at 12am. My daughter had this weird look on her face, she looked very confused and maybe scared, so I decided to keep my cool and act as if I was happy to see him. I made small talk and told him he could stay and watch the movie with us.

I was so nervous and didn't want to panic, I wanted this young man to feel comfortable and make a dumb move, so I could get a better idea of what was going on. I excused myself to go use the restroom, and my daughter followed me. I asked her who this young man was, she looked even more scared than in the living room so I tried to stay calm and reassure her that she was safe.

She told me he had pulled up next to her at the red light on the way home from the dance, she didn't recognize him, and she thought maybe he knew her boyfriend or was a friend of his, but when she rolled down her window, she said he immediately had her phone in his hands, she said he punched her in the face, and then took off when a car pulled up behind them.

I was furious, I told her she was never going to have to worry about that man again, and I was going to make sure she was safe from now on. I made up a story about needing to make sure she was ok, to get back in the living room, and let this young man know that we both were g'nna be going to bed, and he needed to leave.

I made a phone call to my husband, telling him to hurry home, because he was only a few blocks away.

I didn't want to panic because I was a young single mom for most of my life, so I had learned to handle certain situations. The young man got up and left, right as I was finishing up my phone call. I told my daughter I had felt a bad vibe from this person, and that's why we needed to leave. We did a sweep and made sure all the doors and windows were locked and barricaded, (I did this because my husband wasn't home yet and I wanted to make sure we were safe) My daughter and I took a knife from the kitchen to protect ourselves, and we went into her bedroom and locked the door.

Just a few seconds after we were in the room, we heard the front door open, and someone steps into the house, he took a few steps in and stopped so we could hear the door shut slowly, and then he took off running towards the room we were in. The door made a very loud cracking sound when he busted in, and I screamed because I had never heard something like that before.

A loud voice yelled "are you ok?" And my daughter started sobbing, I stood up and started wiping my tears away. My 6 year old son was standing in the doorway, my daughter ran towards him and grabbed him by the shoulders, she pulled him in and hugged him so tightly, I thought she was going to hurt him, but he didn't make a sound, he was too busy staring at me with the saddest look on his face.

I didn't even notice my youngest son standing there until I heard my daughter say "your brother saved me" over and over. Then I looked and saw a baseball bat in his hand, and he had blood all over his clothes and face, and was covered in dirt and dust.

I was so confused, I didn't know what was going on, or why my 2 year old was covered in blood and dirt. My daughter and sons were all crying, and I couldn't make out what anyone was saying.

I was still trying to figure out what was going on when my husband got home, he asked what was going on, but I didn't know what to say, I didn't know what had happened. He grabbed my daughter by the shoulders and asked if she was ok, she didn't look up at him, she just kept saying "your son saved me, he saved me"

My husband looked at me, and I just shook my head, I have no idea what's going on, or what had happened. He asked if the police were on the way, I said no.

He asked me to call them and an ambulance, he said he had to go outside, because he had ran over my sons when he pulled into the driveway. I started crying and I screamed, I couldn't believe my husband had just said that, but my daughter said he was ok, he was on the back porch, so I went to check on him.

Sure enough, there he was, sitting on the back porch completely covered in blood, dirt, and dust, still holding that baseball bat. I sat down next to him and hugged him so tight, I cried so hard, and he just sat there motionless, looking straight ahead.

The police and paramedics arrived, and then the sheriff and his police dog. My husband told me to go back inside with the kids, so I did, and I made them lay down on the bed, I told them to rest, everything was ok, and they were safe. The police and sheriff said they found a few guys down the road trying to change a tire, and they didn't have any ID on them.

They arrested them, and found my daughter's phone in one of their pockets. They said my young sons had done something amazing, and I needed to be so proud of them.

My 2 year old was the hero, he had been up, and heard something going on, so he went out onto the front porch, because he heard someone talking about his sister, he had gotten the baseball bat from the garage and bashed the man who had attacked my daughter in the face with it.

He ran into the house and got my 6 year old, and they both ran back outside, to the man, who had already g'nna into my house, and started hitting and kicking him, and punching him, while screaming "get out of my house", and "get away from my family".

The man started to run, so my sons had ran after him.

When my husband had ran over my son, he had gotten up and started walking towards the house, bleeding from a few places on his body and head, and still had the baseball bat in his hand.

I'm so proud of my sons for sticking up for their family, and I'm so proud of my daughter for being so strong, and never giving up.
