Ethics should be based on self-interest since the only thing you can control is yourself

The only thing you can truly control is your own behavior. No one can force you to do something. Even if someone points a gun to your head you can still say no and die. It's no different for institutions. You can't force the government to change or a corporation to change. The most you can do is try to convince them to change, but they have no moral obligation to change. They are under no obligation to do anything. No one is under an obligation to do anything.

The only thing you can control is yourself. If people want to change the world they should first look at themselves in the mirror. This is why the things that you think important shouldn't be what you expect from others; it should be what you expect from yourself. If you think the world needs more art, produce the art yourself. If you think the world needs more kindness, be kind yourself. If you think the world needs more love, be the love yourself, etc. Produce the change you want to happen and not expect others to do it.

Therefore, you should focus on your interests. Since you can't force others to do anything it should be important what you do. You should maximize your potential. Don't invade other people's business; it's not yours to invade. Focus on your own business. We all have our own business to take care of. It's our responsibility to do that and not to worry about how other people handle their business.
