Napoleon was defeated in 1815. He was exiled and lived the last few years of his life on a remote island in the pacific. During that time, there was a man who worked for him as a servant. He was an old black man from the Congo, who had been a slave since he was a child. Napoleon learned of the man’s situation and grew close to him. After he died, he left all of his wealth to the man, who used it to go back to the Congo, buy the freedom of thousands of slaves, and found a nation. He took many engineering textbooks with him as well and used them to build an impressive nation in the heart of Africa.

Flash forward to 1884. All of Europe’s leaders are in a room in Berlin discussing the fate of Africa. Tensions are high, and the air is thick. One of the ambassadors stands up and starts talking. He says that the Congo has a legitimate government and should not be colonized. The room erupts into chaos. Some agree with him, stating that this is a violation of the 1648 peace accords, but most just laugh at him. They say that the Congo is not a European nation, and therefore should be exempt from those accords. The man who was talking slams his fist on the table. He points out all of the nations that are not in Europe, but are still recognized by the world. He points out how nations are not defined by race, but by the recognition of the international community. He says that the Congo has a formal government and a real military. In fact, it is a very modern and advanced nation, both culturally and technologically. After all, the nation was founded by a man who had all of Napoleon’s wealth and knowledge. The room erupts in chaos again after this comment. Many are outraged, stating that a black nation cannot be equal to the white ones. They say that it is barbaric and that a black man cannot lead a nation. In the end, the pot gets too hot and it eventually boils over. The tension is too high, and before the meeting is over, war is declared.

The war raged on for years, longer than anyone had ever imagined. Some of the battles lasted months, with millions of casualties. The war was brutal, and in some places, there was a merciless genocide. Tens of millions died. Eventually, some of the nations started to run out of steam. Some of them were on the brink of bankruptcy and collapse. In 1898, the war ended with the signing of a peace accord. No nation was a real winner in the war, but the Congo was a moral winner. It was a real nation, and it had earned its place in the world. In 1914, Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated. His death sparked WW1, one of the most destructive wars in history. However, in this timeline, it did not. Since the Congo war had already happened, the tensions between the nations of Europe had been released. The war ended in 1898 and by 1914, they nations of Europe had been able to heal enough for there to be no war. WW1 never happened. And with the absence of WW1 came the absence of WW2.

So what would this world look like? What would it be like if there had never been a WW1 or 2?
