I'm struggling with my 7 year old's attachment to toys. Anyone else succeed in a similar situation?

I'm having a hard time knowing how to approach my 7 year old's toys, and how to get her to see the value of minimalism. At the moment, she's struggling with even getting rid of old, broken toys.

Up until this point, we've just taken most things out of the house when she's too young to remember, but that's becoming an issue now because 1. She's remembering now, and 2. I really want her to adopt some of the same principles that we have.

I have tried explaining it to her, and she did seem to understand the concept, we even made a game out of clearing her room, and at the end we donated all the toys she didn't play with. But now she's asking for them back.

I'm really struggling with this. How do you all approach this with young kids?
