I’ve been an avid diver for over 15 years and the last 12 years, I’ve been a search and rescue diver. I’ve seen my fair share of bad things but when you sign up for this job, you instantly understand that you will see things that most people don’t want to ever see, let alone see firsthand. I’ve helped find dozens of people who were trapped at the bottom of the ocean or lake and was happy to say that the majority of them were ok. You couldn’t find a more rewarding job, and I knew this from the very moment I decided to sign up.

I’ve searched for people who were presumed dead and people who were just lost at sea. A lot of the time, the people I find aren’t alive, but I take solace in the fact that I was able to help find their bodies so their families could have a proper burial and say their goodbyes. It’s a hard job but someone has to do it. That’s what I always tell myself when I find a dead body.

Last week, I got a call from the local police department telling me that a 22-year old woman named, Tanya had gone missing. She was out with her family on their boat in the lake when she went missing. The police were able to track down the location of where her family last saw her and of course as an experienced diver, I knew I had to act fast.

I met up with the police at the location and my equipment and I were taken out to the lake where Tanya went missing. I was given the description of Tanya, which was: 5’4, long red hair, white, and she was wearing a pink bikini along with goggles. I got into the water and dove down to search for her. The water was so clear, almost as if I was in the ocean.

I swam around and my eyes scanned the bottom of the lake, expecting to see a pink swimsuit along with a red head of hair but the more I swam and couldn’t find her, the more worried that I was. I continued to swim around and finally after 4 minutes of looking, I saw something pink. My heart instantly started beating fast, because even though I had found her, she was dead.

She was face down at the bottom of the lake and her long red hair was floating around her head. It looked as if she was looking for something when she fell to her knees and just died. I was baffled at how she was able to fall to her knees and not float to the top of the water after she had died but that didn’t matter at this point. I felt around her for any pulse and she was cold to the touch which meant that she had been down there for a few hours. I lifted her up by the waist and signaled the diver to let them know that I had found her and was coming up with her.

As I made my way up, I looked at her and noticed that her eyes were open and staring. I don’t know why, but for some reason, I felt the need to look into her eyes. When I did, I noticed something strange. Her pupils were black instead of the normal red color that you would see when someone dies from drowning. I had seen a lot of dead bodies over the years and out of all the people that I’ve found that had died from drowning, the pupils were always red. Not black.

I got to the top of the water and the police helped me get her body into the boat. I explained what I saw and the police officers gave each other strange looks.

“You don’t think that they would have tried to salvage her do you?” One of the officers asked me.

“Oh, you know about that?” I asked.

“Well…Yea. We were warned about something happening here and since we got the call saying that she was missing, we knew we had to inform someone.” He said.

“Inform someone?” I asked.

I was confused as to who they needed to inform until it finally clicked in my head.

“You mean US?” I asked.

The Police officers looked at each other and nodded simultaneously.

“Ok, so what is it that you know that I don’t? She had black pupils. Just like someone who had been salvaged.”

Then something even more strange happened.

The police officers started glitching and disappeared into thin air.

I was stunned.

It was as if I was in some sort of simulation. Everything that happened throughout my life, everything that I knew was a lie. Tanya, the police, my family, friends and coworkers. It was all just a simulation designed to keep me occupied until they were ready to salvage me into a “better life.”

Was I really a search and rescue diver or was that just something they made me think?

I looked at Tanya’s dead body that lay in the boat and the only thought that ran through my mind was “What now?”

I grabbed the radio to call for help but the voice on the other end sounded automated and robotic.

“This is not a drill. The simulation project has been compromised. Diver 42 has been compromised. Please get out of the water diver 42.” Was all that the voice on the radio said before static started to take over and everything started glitching around me again.

That’s when I realized that my whole life had been a lie. It was all just a simulation designed to keep me occupied until they salvaged me.

If you’re wondering how I’m writing this knowing that I was asked to get out of the water. The answer to that is simple. I didn’t get out.

I stayed in the water and everything around me just kept glitching until it finally stopped and I was back at the police station with the police officers that were with me earlier.

I acted as if nothing happened and everything was fine.

As of right now, I’m writing this from my bedroom.

The truth is that I’ve been writing this the whole time that I’ve been a diver.

I just wanted you guys to see what it’s like being a search and rescue diver.

But now that you know the truth, I have to delete this.

I can’t let you people see this and I’m sure that they’ll make me think that it was all just a dream or something along those lines.

Until next time…-Diver 42.

Delete.

Delete.

Delete.
