Don’t listen to your parents and join the military

Joining the military is one of the worst decisions you can make. Your parents will encourage you to join. I know why they will. But they are going to push you to join if they know you’re struggling to find a career.

The military is a shitshow. They don’t care about you. They only care about you if you’re in combat. If you get injured, you’re fucked.

You will never get the medical help you need. You will never get the help you need. What they will give you is a run around. A never ending list of people you need to talk to and when you finally make it to that person they’ll just send you somewhere else. You’ll never get the help you need. They don’t care.

I broke my ankle in basic training. I got to live in the medical tent for two weeks after that. So now I’m two weeks behind. When I’m cleared I’m put into a special training program for people who are behind. The way this is structured is one instructor for a few people who are behind. Little did I know this is a bad thing.

I broke my ankle again. This time the injury never healed. I was sent to a different base where I would spend a few months in a temporary profile trying to heal. But just like before, they don’t care. I get sent to a special training camp again. This time the instructor doesn’t care so much. I was able to go on leave for a few months.

When I came back I was cleared. So I get sent back to my original base. Here I am supposed to be given one last chance to get clearance. But of course I’m sent to a special training program where I’m given an instructor that doesn’t care. I get put on a profile. A month later I’m cleared. But I’m not cleared. I get sent to a different base where they try to teach me how to be a mechanic. A month later I’m cleared again. I’m not cleared. I was cut from training and discharged.

I was promised help with my disability. I was promised a job. I was promised a housing voucher. I was promised a school stipend. I was promised medical help. I was promised everything.

I’m out. What now. I have nothing. No job. No medical help. No nothing. I was given a small amount of money and a bus ticket. I had to call a cab from the airport to my parents house.

I still have that ankle injury. I spent four years in the military and I was never able to join my unit. I was never able to deploy. I was never able to do anything but sit around and wait. I was never able to get the medical help I needed.

I’m 30 now. I never went to college. I have a shit job that I found myself. I still have that ankle injury.

Joining the military is one of the worst decisions you can make.
